Santa Clara Pueblo artist Roxanne Swentzell returns to the river with Page!
Join them on this six-day, River Writing and Sculpting Journey for Women
Majestic Canyons of the Green River in Utah
Also called Desolation Canyon
Celebrating 21 years of River Journeys for Women!
Page and the women guests who accompanied her on last year’s special 20th anniversary trip had so much fun with Roxanne Swentzell that Page is bringing Roxanne back again! During the 2018 trip, we’ll be floating down the beautiful Green River through Utah’s Majestic Canyons (also known as Desolation Canyon, or Deso), exploring writing and sculpting as complementary forms of creative expression. During this six-day trip, Roxanne will guide us in sculpting, using river clay and materials gathered from the land, Page will guide us in sculpting with words, and the professional women guides will ensure that our journey is safe, delicious, and well-equipped! This will be the perfect time and place to rediscover the story of your life!
Whether you journal or write professionally, are an established artist or a collector of Roxanne’s work, the natural world unleashes powerful creative energy. The women who participate in these trips have diversified backgrounds; some are experienced writers and artists, many are not. Some have rafted before, many have not. But all share the desire for a creative adventure in the wilderness with other women. We've purposely selected this later trip date in order to synchronize the river's more relaxed, late-season rhythm with the slower pace of the creative journey.
More about Roxanne Swentzell
Roxanne Swentzell is a world-renowned clay sculptor from the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico. Recognition for her award-winning art began when she was in her early twenties, and include the 2016 Heard Museum’s Spirit of the Heard Award, Best of Sculpture Award and Market’s Creative Excellence Award in Sculpture at the Santa Fe Indian Market, and a New Mexico Living Treasure Award. Her sculptures are widely exhibited in such places as the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, the White House in Washington, D.C., and the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ. Permanent installations include Cartier in Paris, Santa Fe Convention Center in New Mexico, Museum of Wellington in New Zealand, and the Denver Art Museum in Colorado. Her figures represent a full range of emotions and irrepressible moods, and focus on interpretative female portraits attempting to bring back the balance of power between the male and female inherently recognized in her own Pueblo culture.
More about Our River Writing Journey
Outfitted by Sheri Griffith Expeditions, everything river-trip related for this women-only adventure is provided—professional women guides, oar boats, tents, sleeping bags, and fresh healthy meals. The guides do all the cooking, and row the rafts. Float past the stunning geological features and cultural history of the Majestic Canyons of the Green River, capturing insights and reflections in your journals. Swim in the Green’s warm waters or have fun paddling inflatable kayaks in the moderate rapids. Each evening at camp, beneath a desert sky full of heavenly stars, we’ll gather with Page and Roxanne for inspiring conversations. Campsites on beautiful beaches along the riverbank are remote, so we carry with us all the comforts we'll need for our stay in the natural world. Every camp is pristine with only a few footprints of birds, animals or other travelers who pass this way.
“Sue and Lynnette had a life-changing experience on the river with Page. If they are any measure, there are about 18 more women who have the same feeling. Come cocktail hour, they regale me with tales of the trip. We have a neighbor and her sister who want to do the trip next time—they seem quite excited. Once again, Page, you have touched our lives!” Larry, husband of River Writing & Sculpting guest, 2017
“Lynne and I agreed that the river trip was the greatest and most memorable experience either one of us had ever had in our lives! It will be in our hearts forever and we are so happy that you came into our lives, Thank you, Page!” Sue, River Writing & Sculpting guest, 2017
“I am grateful for this canyon retreat as it became much more than a river trip for me. I have been searching for a way to return to the land since I was 17 and left the Yampa Valley. Now, thanks to you, I have found a place to feed the primeval need to literally hold ancient dirt and mud and clay in the bowl of my hands, to see how the basic elements of earth, water, and fire come together during creation, to see stars after the moon goes down at night, and watch the canyon walls by day.” Kaye Roll, River Writing & Sculpting guest, 2017
“Page, thank YOU for another truly magnificent journey! I cannot thank you enough for making the river trip so memorable and for the opportunity to participate in something so amazing.” Stefanie Goebel, California, 2010 River Writing & Sculpting
|Note from Page: My special friend Roxanne is my guest on this six-day journey and though we will be interacting with clay and words the entire time, this is not a workshop. It is about the gifts of inspiration and rejuvenation that we share with each other and that come to us like the river—in quiet waves that wash the outer world away and let us see more deeply into the heart of our own creativity.|

"The trip exceeded anything I could have planned for, but then, a heroine must give up all expectations and any sense of control, surrendering to what befalls her. She must trust her instincts and the gifts she has been given. I'm so grateful that we embarked on our heroic journey together. I still wake at night and listen for the river, missing it and that vast and deep (and eventful) sky we got to watch through the nights. I will never forget the beauty and power of the river or all of your open hearts and ready laughs.” - Ellen McLaughlin, Actor and Playwright, New York, Featured Guest 2014
“Page, on the plane for Tulsa—thanks beyond thanks for the opportunity.” -- Joy Harjo, Oklahoma, Crazy Brave River Writing Journey 2013
Working with SGE for 21 years, Page’s river writing journeys for women with SGE were featured in Oprah’s O magazine in 2006 as “One of the top six great, all-girl getaways of the year.”
